How can we strengthen cooperation and networking on urgent marine biodiversity challenges across Europe? Bringing people together, facilitating exchange, developing visions - these were the goals for the #kexMarineCluster event held in Brussels in March. 30 Horizon Europe-funded projects from the “Restoration & protection for marine biodiversity” cluster and the “Reducing bycatch” cluster as well as representatives of the three European Commission departments for environment, for maritime affairs and fisheries and for research and innovation followed the invitation. One aim of the event was to co-develop a vision for the cluster, exploring added-value (building on existing initiatives), needs and opportunities for the long-term. Another objective was to promote exchange between the projects and open up a space to share approaches and best practices/lessons learned not only during the event itself, but also beyond. Hugh Possingham, a global leader in biodiversity conservation, shared insights on science, policy, and marine conservation in his keynote speech. Also worth mentioning is the fantastic graphic recording by Charlotte Hintzmann, who brought the results of the presentations, discussions and group works creatively and impressively to the point. Eine freie Wissenschaft gehört zum Kern liberaler, demokratischer Gesellschaften. Es ist in höchstem Maße besorgniserregend, dass die #Freiheit der #Wissenschaft in verschiedenen Regionen der Welt zunehmend unter Druck gerät. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat die #Allianz der #Wissenschaftsorganisationen* zusammen mit dem geschäftsführenden Bundesminister für Bildung und Forschung, Cem Özdemir, eine gemeinsame Erklärung zur #Freiheit der #Wissenschaft verabschiedet. Helmholtz-Präsident Otmar D. Wiestler vertrat auf der #Pressekonferenz in Berlin den aktuellen Sprecher der Allianz der Wissenschaftsorganisationen Holger Hanselka, Präsident der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Wiestler sagte: „Wir sind uns in der Allianz der Wissenschaftsorganisationen einig: Um Lösungen für die globalen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit, wie Klimawandel oder biomedizinische Probleme, zu finden, müssen wir unsere #internationalen #Kooperationen stärken. Time for good news? More than ever! We keep asking our colleagues about discoveries and developments that give them a positive outlook for the future. Dr. Jan-Claas Dajka works in the Transfer Office for Marine Biodiversity Change to promote dialog between science and politics. He is encouraged by the fact that policy makers have shown themselves to be very open to discussion and criticism.   “Over the last few months, I have spoken to a number of political decision-makers at EU, national and federal state level. We discussed quite conceptual criticism of very established environmental management tools such as thresholds and marine protected areas. To my surprise, the overwhelming majority of policy makers I've talked to were very open to hearing this criticism and actually actively helped taking my ideas for alternative management approaches to the next level. They gave tips, suggested windows for opportunity in the political process and referred me to colleagues. I'm quite new to the science-policy interface, but going into it, I did not expect my work to be met with this much openness - this is super uplifting and fuels me with hope for the future.”   #marinebiodiversity #sciencepolicydialogue #goodnews

Heute ist der internationale Tag des #Artenschutzes! 🪸 #Biodiversität und #Artenvielfalt finden sich überall auf unserer Erde: auch auf dem Meeresboden der #Antarktis. Trotz der extremen Bedingungen gibt es eine erstaunliche Vielfalt an Lebewesen, die in den kalten, dunklen Gewässern leben. Von leuchtenden Tiefsee-Kreaturen bis hin zu Eisfischen und Schwämmen. Doch der Klimawandel und menschliche Eingriffe bedrohen diese einzigartigen Ökosysteme. Eine wichtige Entscheidung für den globalen Artenschutz haben Expert:innen aus fast 200 Ländern in der letzten Woche auf dem Weltnaturgipfel in Rom getroffen: Sie einigten sich auf einen Finanzierungsplan, um die bis 2030 gesteckten Artenschutzziele umzusetzen.
