Open call! Our artist in residence program is entering its fourth year. Together with the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, we are looking for an artist for the beginning of 2026 who deals with aspects of change in marine biodiversity and promotes public understanding and the transfer of knowledge in a changing world through art. Main objectives are to develop new formats for the transfer of science into social and/or political debates and to build new networks to promote the visibility of marine biodiversity research. HIFMB aims for the most effective interaction and will create conditions for an inspiring and creative collegial dialogue between artists and researchers. The call for our 2026 postdoc cohort is now open. Antarctica’s Southern Ocean is a rich, largely ungoverned marine habitat facing growing human activity. It plays a key role in regulating climate but is rapidly changing due to global warming. These changes threaten cold-adapted species and ecosystems. We invite applications for four positions, covering natural and social science perspectives, that will cohere around the ‘dilemma’ facing the Southern Ocean: how competing interests impact its governance, but also drive the need for greater science to understand its changes: #1 Geopolitical dilemmas for management: transfer for governance #2 Sustaining the keystone: Rethinking Antarctic krill fishery management under climate change #3 Navigating uncertainty: Planning marine protected areas in a changing Southern Ocean #4 Acoustic possibilities for Southern Ocean management dilemmas View all positions here: hifmb.de/jobs Application open until August 24th, 2025.

🎤 B-USEFUL Roadshow This week at the HIFMB 2025 Symposium, the B-USEFUL coordinator Martin Lindegren (DTU Aqua) presented the talk: 🗣️ “How to B-USEFUL in marine biodiversity protection and spatial planning” 📍 Oldenburg, Germany The presentation highlighted the project’s contributions to biodiversity #policy and #spatialplanning across #Europeanseas. Martin touched on a key question of the moment: How can we protect 30% of marine areas, safeguard biodiversity, and at the same time minimize impacts on fishing communities? I'm thrilled to announce that we have a new postdoc position (funded for 3-years) available in our group at the HIFMB to study plasmids and plasmids systems of the marine environment to better understand their utility in microbial responses to environmental change, especially in polar waters. Together with the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, we award a fellowship for an artist in residence every year. The #ArtWaves program promotes collaboration between art and science in order to reflect creatively on changes in marine biodiversity. This gives rise to new formats that bring scientific findings into social and political discourse, and on the part of the scientists, the exchange promotes creative and interdisciplinary approaches.   🎬 This video is part of the film “UN Ocean Actions in Germany” - an overview of programs and projects led and implemented by scientists and innovators as part of the #UNOceandecade in Germany.
